NEWS IN RWANDA STUTTERING ASSOCIATION

Rwanda, is a country in East Africa, is a land of great diversity and beauty, popularly known as "the land of a thousand hills."
There are 8 million people in our country, which means there are over
80,000 people who stutter.
in 1994, it passed there a genocide which killed more than 1.200.000 innocent people during 100 days
When the genocide ended, the new government established people courts(commonly named gacaca courts) which try people for crimes committed during the genocide.

One very important role of the Rwanda Stuttering Association is to
protect the rights of people who stutter who find it difficult to defend themselves inthe gacaca courts.

The defendant who stutters cannot adequately explain everything that occurred in the genocide
because of stuttering. Often the stutterer who pleads not guilty is
ignored or laughed at. If he cannot defend himself adequately in front of the tribunal, he can be condemned to death even if he is innocent of participating in the genocide. Genocide survivors are also
unable to give adequate testimony against the criminals because of
their stuttering.
